Categories of Debate
Public Forum Debate
Public Forum Debate, commonly referred to as PF, is a form of competitive debate where two teams of two students each compete against one another on a given topic. The format of PF is unique in that it aims to be accessible to a wide range of students, with a focus on clarity and persuasiveness. Through PF, students develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills that prepare them for success in college, careers, and beyond. Additionally, PF provides a forum for students to engage with current events, gain confidence in their ability to advocate for their ideas, and build lasting relationships with fellow debaters.
Congressional Debate
Congressional Debate, also known as Congress, is a unique form of debate that simulates the legislative process of the United States Congress. Students assume the role of representatives or senators and engage in a structured debate on a variety of proposed legislation. The format encourages students to engage in lively discussions on issues ranging from education and healthcare to foreign policy and social justice. Students develop skills in research, public speaking, argumentation, and parliamentary procedure while gaining a deeper understanding of how our government works. Through High School Congressional Debate, students build leadership skills, learn to collaborate effectively with others, and develop a lifelong appreciation for civic engagement.
